  7. Internet File Format Support In WinZip 5.6:
  8.  
  9. The Internet is becoming more and more popular, and unlike
  10. CompuServe and most other online services, not all parts of the
  11. the Internet have standardized on the ZIP file format.  Many
  12. Internet sites distribute files in "gzip" and Unix "compress"
  13. format (files ending in GZ or Z) and use the old TAR (Tape
  14. ARchive) format to group files.
  15.  
  16. WinZip 5.6 adds support for the TAR, gzip, and Unix compress
  17. formats.  This means you can use WinZip to work with almost all
  18. compressed files downloaded from the Internet.  WinZip 5.6 also
  19. lets you decompress files in the "Microsoft Compress" format
  20. (LZEXPAND) used on the Windows 3.x distribution disks and some
  21. other Microsoft product distribution disks.  No external programs
  22. are needed for these file formats.

  24. Some notes on the new Internet file format support:
  25.  
  26. - WinZip does not let you create files in these formats, but other
  27.   features (Extract, View, CheckOut) all work.
  28.  
  29. - Unlike ZIP, TAR, LZH, ARJ, and ARC files Microsoft-compressed
  30.   files and Z files (gzip/compress) contain only ONE file.
  31.  
  32. - Unlike ZIP, LZH, ARJ, and ARC files, TAR files are NEVER
  33.   compressed.
  34.  
  35. - Since TAR files are often distributed in Z format (with
  36.   extensions like .TAZ and .TGZ) WinZip treats Z files containing
  37.   a TAR file as a special case:  WinZip offers to decompress and
  38.   open the TAR file.
  39.  
  40. - There is no reliable way to determine the uncompressed size of
  41.   files in the gzip and compress format, so WinZip shows the size
  42.   as a question mark.

  44. Other Changes in WinZip 5.6:
  45.  
  46. - A new checkbox in the Configuration dialog box determines
  47.   whether the right mouse button pops up a menu or selects listbox
  48.   entries as in earlier versions.
  49.  
  50. - Conversion from long names to MS-DOS 8.3 filenames is smarter
  51.   than in previous versions:  a name like XXX.YYY.TXT is now
  52.   converted to XXXYYY.TXT rather than being truncated to XXX.YYY.
